Just for the Moment: The Remarkable Gift of the Therapy Dog

is released by author Deanna Klingel

Golden retriever Lily, born on Valentine’s Day, came to her new home on Easter weekend. Although she provided the usual puppy mischief, she never pushed on a door, got on the bed or dragged the author, who suffered from Lyme disease. She breezed through obedience and agility training, and passed her Canine Good Citizen test. When the time came to pass the Therapy Dog International certification test, she did so with flying colors. Knowing how much Lily had helped her own recovery, the author decided to share her experience with others, beginning Lily’s ministry as a therapy dog.

Just for the Moment shows the often-poignant and spiritual journey of Lily and Jessie, another golden retriever therapy dog – ordinary pets who became extraordinary therapy dogs, weaving small miracles every day. For instance, it is Lily who first discovers that Jessie, abandoned and clinging to life, was blind. (Treatment has brought her some vision.) The dogs’ visits to health care facilities show that sometimes all a patient needs is a quiet listener, a friendly look or soft fur to touch. The therapy dogs do everything from calming a nursing home resident frantic to get home to feed her own dog to lowering the blood pressure of patients at the free dental clinic. They are easy to be around and easy to talk to. As the author writes, “Through a dog, they reconnected for just a moment to a life they used to enjoy. Laughter is healing, and I believe we’ve brought some healing and joy to them.”

Author Deanna Klingel is a member of the North Carolina Writer’s Network, Society of Childrens’ Book Writers and Illustrators, American Christian Fiction Writers and Royal Scribblers of Cashiers. She lives in Sapphire Valley, N.C. Lily, 9, is in the third level of advancement for Therapy Dogs International and is a library Reading Buddy. Jessie, 14, is in the second level of advancement for Therapy Dog International and a library Reading Buddy. She recently was diagnosed with leukemia.

Just for the Moment: The Remarkable Gift of the Therapy Dog by Deanna Klingel is a poignant, yet sweetly humorous spiritual journey into the therapy dog ministry of Lily and Jessie, two Golden Retrievers who visit health care facilities. Learn how ordinary pets become therapy dogs, and how they weave their small miracles every day. The dogs show us that uncomfortable moments in awkward situations exist only for humans. In a unique compilation of vignettes, in places where frustration and loneliness reside, the therapy dogs show us that the greatest gift is to listen quietly, and spend just a moment, paying quiet attention. A soft nuzzle, a head in the lap, a friendly look into the eyes may be all that was needed in that moment, and is often not remembered beyond that moment. This is a book for every family member and friend, dog lovers of all ages, people in search of a ministry, or anyone who enjoys a pleasant read.

Steven Manchester says, “I’ve been an editor for many years (dozens and dozens of manuscripts), and this is among the top 3!”
